Don’t Let the “F” Word Scare You

Fitness the “f” word so many people just love to avoid. It’s understandable but maybe, it’s because you haven’t found what makes you happy. I have been a fitness fanatic most of my life. Growing up in South Florida, I was exposed to a lot of outdoor activities. I was a runner, played tennis and loved all types of exercise. While I love other forms of staying active, dance has always been my passion, so when I found an exercise program that combined both dance and fitness, I was sold!

I know I may be biased, but there aren’t many programs that have stood the test of time like Jazzercise. It was developed 50 years ago by dance teacher Judi Sheppard Missett. She realized her students didn’t want professional dance training and truly wanted to simply find a way to dance and burn calories. This was a lightbulb moment for her, and thus, Jazzercise was formed – a combination of dance, Pilates, yoga and strength training to give you a full body workout. Today, there are over 8,000 franchises in 32 countries, so clearly it’s still going strong!

Outside of a great workout, Jazzercise has brought me (and many others!) a community of positive women who encourage each other through each workout. I have been an instructor for the past 15 years, and I currently teach at Alpharetta Northpoint Jazzercise. I love my students and instructors. The feeling of looking forward to my classes and the interaction I have with my students each day is what has kept me going all these years. We have FUN!

It is so important, too, that we stay active during middle age. Our bodies are changing and the aches and pains may be increasing. All the more reason to keep moving. If you don’t use it, you will lose it!

Some of you are saying to yourself, “I haven’t exercised in years, and I don’t know where to start.” Whether group fitness is something you are thinking about trying or not your thing, I do have a handful of tips for you to keep in mind:

  1. Start Small: Maybe, start walking 2-3 days a week.
  2. Walk Extra When You Can: Use the stairs and don’t look for the closest parking spot. Take advantage of a long walk before going into the supermarket. All of these little things add up throughout the day!
  3. Find Something You Love: If its’not a group workout, maybe its swimming laps in the pool. Jogging on the weekends. Walking at the park – whatever motivates you to get out of bed in the morning and get moving. Once you find a program or activity that you love, it will become a part of your daily life.
  4. Make Healthy Choices: I hate the word “diet” but when you start exercising, your body will crave healthier foods. Unfortunately, results come when you combine both moving and eating healthy (I know, it’s frustrating!). Exercise is a small component of overall health but so important for your mental and physical well-being.
  5. Give Group Fitness A Shot!: If and when you are ready, look for a group fitness program that fits into your schedule. Group fitness adds the social aspect to your workout program. You will meet new people, and you will be held accountable. It can be fun!

Again, this is why I love Jazzercise and am a huge advocate for the program. My sincere hope is you come to my class, get lost in the music and dance your way to a more confident you in just 60 minutes. We have varying formats, each different enough to mix it up each day. Interval Fusion provides strength and cardio, Strength 60 requires no dancing at all and Strike adds in kickboxing to our fitness program. There is really something for everyone.

Jazzercise may not be for you, but it keeps me going, and I have formed lasting relationships with the women I have met over the years. My goal is to give you one hour where you can be “you” and have fun while boosting your metabolism and becoming healthy.
