Finding your Passion in 2020
Imagine acquiring sky-high confidence after just one single fitness class. The type of confidence that is transformative. Life-changing. This isn’t a fairytale. This life-changing regiment is best known as aerial fitness, aerial dance, or fitness off the ground. I know what your thinking. The answer is that you are not too old and it is not too late. The aerial fitness community is warm and the environment has an inclusive and body-positive feel where everyone is accepted. The beginning of your journey doesn’t require you to be in any particular physical shape. It doesn’t require a background in formal dance. It only requires an open mind and a desire to learn something new.
Aerial fitness has just as many emotional and spiritual benefits as it does physical. Achieving the youthful body of a dancer is simply a coincidental reward bestowed upon those who submit to the process. Although aerial fitness is commonly coined “aerial dance” it is not even remotely about perfecting choreography, but instead about moving in a way that’s nurturing to each individual. For some, aerial dance has not only provided a venue to get into the best shape of their life, but it has also provided a safe and cathartic space to “unpack” some tough emotional experiences. The mind-body connection is unparalleled to any other form of fitness. People begin connecting to their truest selves and relate to the world and others in a way that was intended. The way you see your body and all that it is capable of causes the brain to do some considerable rewiring and forces us to re-evaluate our perceived limitations.
From the very first moment you enter the studio, you will feel the wonder of a child. An emotion most of us abandoned quite some time ago. Beautiful soft and colorful fabrics are suspended from the ceiling. Curiosity and intrigue infiltrate even the harshest of critics. In small intimate groups, you learn to tie your fabric, wear it like a backpack and immediately dive into what will feel like a weightless experience. You feel everything working. Every nerve, from your fingertips to your toes, comes alive. Time slips away. The world’s problems have just faded to black for an entire hour of your life. The class is over. Your watch confirms that you just burned 620 calories. You feverishly make your way to the front desk to schedule a time to return.
For the first time fitness doesn’t feel like work. It feels like passion. Days of feeling torn between working out and eating a donut are behind you. You have transcended beyond what you thought was possible for yourself. You have officially found what will fuel you to become the best version of yourself in 2020.
Regardless of where your journey takes you in 2020 my hope for you is that you commit to pursuing a passion. It is never too late to dance, become an artist or run a marathon. We set our own limitations, and learning to reshape them is the key to success.
